This Worthington Field Studies Program will offer a unique opportunity to students.  Students who are accepted to participate in the course will travel to the Puerto Rico for eight days. Upon successful completion of the course, each student can earn one-half elective science credit in Marine Biology.

In addition to learning about marine biology, geology, ecology and studying many of the environmental issues of the areas being visited, participants will be afforded the opportunity to test themselves both physically and mentally.  Participants will be able to view the beauty of clean, clear, and isolated Puerto Rican beaches while learning more about the culture of the area.  Participants will spend time investigating the rain forest and tidal pools, exploring coastal environments, hiking, sampling native cuisine, and an amazing ziplinning trip.  Participants can be assured that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

COVID-19

The Covid-19 situation is uncertain and changes frequently. Worthington Field Studies is regularly evaluating the situation and safety implications, and will make decisions regarding the course based on medical advice and our best judgment. This may include changes to our itinerary and activities, or worst case scenario, full-course cancellation. We will do our best to give advance notice of changes, but some situations may dictate last-minute changes.

Our procedures are based on outdoor industry best-practices for running outdoor courses during the Covid-19 Pandemic. While we expect these precautions to ensure a fun and safe course, some risk of Covid-19 exposure will remain with any outdoor or social activity like WFSI. For students at higher risk for severe illness from Covid-19 (see CDC guidelines here), we encourage you to consult your healthcare provider and consider participating in a WFSI course in later years.

By signing up for the WFSI Puerto Rico Spring Break 2024 trip, you acknowledge these risks and you/your child’s responsibility in contributing to mitigating these risks. If a student is found to be violating any safety protocols set in place before or during the course, WFSI reserves the right to dismiss the student from the course immediately with no refund. Any travel expenses incurred if a student is dismissed while the course is in session will be paid by the student/family.

Precautions taken might include but are not limited to: testing and isolation of staff/students prior to and throughout pre-trip classes, frequent hand washing and/or sanitizing, wearing masks in public spaces including outdoors if a minimum of 6 feet from those outside of WFSI cannot be maintained, reducing or eliminating town days to reduce intermingling with the general public, decreased travel (visiting fewer locations for longer duration of time), and daily wellness checks for all staff and students.

ALL STUDENTS AND STAFF MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED BY MARCH 31, 2024.
